Mr. Sacco meet Mr. Sakic

On June 4, 2009 the Colorado Avalanche named Joe Sacco as the new head coach.  This will be the first NHL head coaching job for the 40 year old, American born Sacco after only serving two years as head coach for Colorado’s AHL affiliate the Lake Erie Monsters.   Both seasons the Monsters finished their seasons 6th overall and did not make the playoffs.   It seems as Colorado is looking to take the team in a new direction as far as coaching by bringing in young, fresh eyes after coming off of the worst season in franchise history.

Super Sweet Sixteen…

Sixteen is a number that means many different things to many different people. To a teenager, it means a drivers license. To the Indian philosopher Alain Daniélou, it means “The age of the gods is always sixteen. Sixteen represents the number of perfection, of plenitude. In man it is after the sixteenth year that the first elements of decay begin to appear, and when the moon reaches the sixteenth digit it begins to decrease.” To a hockey player it means the number of games he must win in order to win Lord Stanley’s cup.

“NHL Officials - The Modern Day Elliot Ness”

Have you ever watched an NHL game where the officials have either not enforced or miss-enforced what you know to be the rules of the game of hockey?  I was watching last nights Sharks vs. Calgary game and after several blatant infractions by both teams and no calls by the officials, one of the Sharks color announcers, Drew Ramenda made a very interesting query; “Which do you prefer, a ref that calls everything or a ref that calls nothing?”  .  Randy Hahn’s response was very similar to my own opinion; he said “everything.”
